Prepare for a case of sticker shock should you go searching elsewhere for a fully certified book signed by the Dalai Lama, especially if it is the same book offered here. While signed photos of the Tibetan Holy Man appear plentiful, signed books are much scarcer and command significant prices. Our daredevil consignor is throwing caution to the wind by starting this official U.S. Government Printing Office book at a rock bottom starting point.

The spiritual and temporal leader of the Tibetan people, 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso was received by the U.S.A. at an official ceremony on 4/18/91. This dignified event was preserved in the form of a 1992 book titled in full as “Congressional Ceremony To Welcome His Holiness The Dalai Lama Of Tibet”. Page “iv” of this book is printed with the details of an actual Congressional resolution with the header “H. Con. Res. 115”, authorizing the use of Capitol Building rotunda for a reception to honor Gyatso. The last line of text on this page reads verbatim as “In addition to the usual number, there shall be printed, for the use of the Joint Committee on Printing, such number of copies of the document as does not exceed a cost of $3,000.”.

While we do not know the number of copies printed, based on the information at hand we’re betting it’s not many. Located at the front of this like-new book on a photo page opposite the title page, his Holiness’ signature shows striking (“9”) quality. As tempting as it is to remove this page for framed display, serious consideration for the scarce nature of this official Congressional book must be given, as it is virtually impossible to say how many signed copies exist.

In plain English, this is a rare official book in excellent condition signed by a revered world leader with full photo LOA from JSA.
