The 9/29/32-10/3/32 quartet of San Francisco Chronicle complete issues feature the following headlines: "Yanks Overpower Cubs, 12 to 6, in Opener" (w/Gehrig/Ruth HR image); "Gomez Pitches Yanks to Second Victory" (w/game-action image); "Ruth and Gehrig Hit 2 Home Runs Each as Yanks Win 7-5" (Ruth's Called Shot game); and "Yanks Sweep Burlesque Series With Cubs."

Included as well is a 10/2/32 Mobile Press Register section with the headline "Ruth, Gehrig Hit to Beat Cubs (w/Ruth-Gehrig image) and an incredible interior quote about Ruth's called shot: "Up came Ruth, but even in this dangerous spot, Root started to pitch to the Babe. With the count two balls and one strike, Ruth motioned with his hand for Root to pitch him one outside, and apparently that's where the next pitch came because Ruth drove it far into the left-center field bleachers for his first home run of the series."

Newspaper Archive Introduction: This lot forms part of an impressive collection of 1910s-1960s sports and U.S. history newspapers offered in our current auction. Typical of newspaper archives of this vintage, the preservation is quite strong in the central areas, with expected perimeter tanning and chipping. That said, it's important to emphasize that the pages are refreshingly sturdy and supple overall, not brittle unless specifically noted as such in rare instances. There are also some previously bound "rag" editions that came directly out of newspaper files and thus exhibit white pages with very little edge chipping.
