Description

As baseball was rolling out ceremonies and celebrations in honor of its 1939 Centennial, a dedicated fan thought to commemorate the occasion with this encompassing collection. (400+) Autographs range in glorious (“8” to “10”) quality in this truly special accumulation of (21) team sheets, including all (8) National League teams, (6) American League teams and (7) American Association minor league teams. Key signers are: HOFers: L. Appling, L. Boudreau, L. Durocher, B. Feller, J. Gordon, G. Hartnett, B. Herman, C. Hubbell, G. Kelly, E. Lombardi, A. Lopez, T. Lyons, C. Mack, J. McCarthy, B. McKechnie, J. Mize, M. Ott, P.W. Reese, P. Rizzuto, R. Ruffing, E. Slaughter, C. Stengel, B. Terry, P. Traynor, A. Vaughn, H. Wagner, L. Waner, P. Waner; and notables: T. Bonham, G. Brack, (2) H. Casey, F. Crosetti, V. DiMaggio, W. Hershberger, C. Keller, P. Martin, J. Powell, M. Stratton, M. Thomas. Full photo LOA from JSA. More on our website.

This spiral spine, faux leather binder remains in excellent condition, with all pages turning smoothly. The inside of the front cover is decorated with a clipping from a 1939 Baseball Centennial program and the opposite page features a Connie Mack 8 x 10-3/4” litho by artist Bill Medcalf. The last two pages feature (4) 4-1/2 x 6” lithos by Medcalf with “Babe” Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Ty Cobb and John McGraw. The page following the Mack litho bears a team photo of the 1939 Minneapolis Millers A.A. minor league team, leading to the possibility that the devout fan who assembled this vintage treasure resided in Minnesota. Each team sheet is affixed at top with either a block of four or a single 1939 U.S. commemorative “Centennial of Baseball” postage stamp. Great excitement is generated by several early (pre-major league) signatures of top stars and many long deceased players. Of the (24) possible teams for the three leagues collected in this album only the Boston Red Sox, Washington Senators and Columbus Red Birds are absent (and as noted below the Detroit Tigers page is completely clubhouse).
